This Weekend’s Boxing Highlights

This weekend’s boxing highlights include two of the best fights in the sport. One of the most notable was a unanimous decision win for Keith Thurman over Jose Barrios. Thurman was a former unified champion and was the first woman to ever win the world heavyweight title. He landed huge right hands and left hooks while keeping Barrios out of trouble. Despite this, Barrios fought with a very strong jab, so Thurman landed a series of clean combinations, including a shovel body shot with the left hand.

Another outstanding fight was between two undefeated women. Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada, a 22-year-old American, has been on a roll and has won six straight battles. She dethroned Cecilia Braekhus, who had fought 36 times in a row, in December. Then, in July, she defeated Kandi Wyatt, who had beaten her twice. In the last month, Katie Taylor has earned all three world welterweight belts and has been making strong conquests.

In the latest event, a young Brazilian named Kali Reis won her second consecutive welterweight crown by knocking out Cecilia Braekhus in December. This marks her first successful defense of the 147-pound belt since Braekhus. This fight is also worthy of viewing as the debut of this newest contender. The win was one of the biggest upsets in boxing history for the Brazilian, and we’re sure she’ll be back for more in the near future.
